The Rest

Random thoughts, personal notes, bits of humor, cultural commentary and the blatantly political all appear here. While I can hardly claim that anything I opine is uninfluenced by my theological proclivities, I also cannot claim that my theology is untouched by who I am as a white, North-American, middle-class feminist from the left-coast. This is the place for commentary that makes no claim to necessarily be 'orthodox', much less 'Orthodox.'

So I will know my people's plight

Show me the suffering of the most miserable;
So I will know my people's plight.
Free me to pray for others;
For you are present in every person.
Help me take responsibility for my own life;
So that I can be free at last.
Grant me courage to serve others;
For in service there is true life.
Give me honesty and patience;
So that the Spirit will be alive among us.
Let the Spirit flourish and grow;
So that we will never tire of the struggle.
Let us remember those who have died for justice;

The Change we Seek

There is really nothing I can add to the flurry of excellent commentary which has erupted on the internet since last night. But I am so proud to stand with a 106-year-old black woman and say that I too voted for someone who, only a short century ago, would not have been allowed to participate in his governance, much less be the president. It is my hope and prayer that the long arc of history continues to bend towards justice.

Perception vs. Reality: A Rant

This is, as the title indicates, a rant. A long rant. A peevish, ridiculous, adolescent rant. Having clarified the emotional maturity of what follows, let me begin.

"Your Whiteness is Showing"

A (somewhat) funny and scathing open letter by Tim Wise to white women voting for McCain as a protest against the sexist treatment of Hillary Clinton:

[quote="Tim Wise"] This is an open letter to those white women who, despite their proclamations of progressivism, and supposedly because of their commitment to feminism, are threatening to withhold support from Barack Obama in November. You know who you are.

"But I am a woman..."

On May 20th, 12:56 am, I complete my Oregon Ballot, and cast my vote in the Democratic Primary. I was so conflicted that I left the presidential candidates for last. I actually sealed both the envelopes (in Oregon, we do a mail in ballot, one envelope for ballot secrecy, the other to mail) and was doing dishes when I realized that I had completely forgotten to fill in my little bubble for president. I opened the envelopes carefully, stared once again at my choices, and cast my vote.

Bells!

This weekend I was up in Seattle for the fabulous NW Folklike festival, which really deserves a post all its own, but probably won't get one this time around. On Sunday I decided to visit St. Spiridon's Orthodox Church (OCA) which I had not been to in decades (literally). And I got to hear bells! Beautiful, ringing, real live bells!
